Alcohol and a baby’s health

Future daddies! Cut down on your alcohol consumption now!

Consuming alcohol before conception can have an impact on an infant’s health.

After all the studies on the link between a father’s age and his child’s health, and a father’s obesity with the risk to his child developing breast cancer, there is now a new study, coming out of China, about the effects of future parents drinking habits on their offspring’s health, even before conception. According to these studies, overconsumption can have an impact on the cardiac health of a newborn.

Even if we all know that drinking alcohol is prohibited during pregnancy, the effects of its consumption before conception, are less known. However, it is on this subject that Chinese researchers have recently shared their results having conducted 55 studies across various continents*.

In general, heavy alcohol consumption is a public health problem because it is the first preventable cause of cancer.

Researchers have found that there is 16% increase in the risk of cardiac malformation in an infant when the mother consumes alcohol compared to when she does not drink at all, and 44% when the father consumes alcohol.  These figures rise to 42% when the mother consumes more than 116g per day, and 47% when the father consumes more than 375g per day.
